Clos des Papes rouge ist ein eleganter Wein mit einer sehr seidigen Struktur und einer schönen Nachhaltigkeit. Ein sehr ausgewogener Wein. Er weist wie so oft Merkmale von roten Früchten (Kirschen, Himbeeren), aber auch von schwarzen Früchten (schwarze Johannisbeeren, Brombeeren) auf. Man findet ebenso einen würzigen Charakter getrockneter Kräuter. Dies ist zweifellos ein Lagerwein, da er eine sehr schöne Frische aufweist.

"Deeply coloured and quite dark in character, with damson and liquorice notes. It’s generous, full-bodied, quite spicy and fairly potent, with lovely bright, sappy acidity and very fine, soft tannins. There are some similarities with 2022 and 2020, though it’s not as punchy as 2022 nor quite as energetic as 2020. This should be very good, and will drink before both of these recent vintages. All destemmed, aged in old foudres. The estate had a good yield this year, at 25hl/ha."

"The 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des Papes is exquisite, wafting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of sweet red berries, iris, dark cherries, menthol, blood orange and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, it’s denser than usual, with a more pronounced structure and a lovely, fleshy core of fruit. Concluding with an ethereal, saline and weightless finish, this is a strong candidate for wine of the vintage - one that should evolve with grace over the coming years to attain a likely perfect score. Clos des Papes stands as a benchmark estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was founded under its current name in 1896 by Paul Avril and is today directed by Paul-Vincent Avril. Rather than pursuing innovation for its own sake, the domaine has refined traditional practices with quiet rigor and unwavering fidelity to terroir."

"Checking in at 15.7% alcohol, the 2023 Chateauneuf-du-Pape is totally sexy. Ripe lack fruits, cassis pastilles, licorice, garrigue and herbal elements are all pushed forward. Framed by smooth tannins, the full-bodied 2023 jumps at you right away. It mesmerizes with gorgeous purity of fruit, lifting freshness and ample resilience on the focused finale. I can’t wait to taste it from bottle. Drink 2028 - 2045"

"The nose shows a wildness, liquorice and spice. The palate follows through with those liquorice notes, animal and five spice (real Mourvèdre notes). The tannins are wonderfully supple, sweet and succulent and are supported by a peppery herbal snap. Excellent concentration and a ripe dense finish. Another superb Clos des Papes. Drink 2030 - 2050"

"Regular red robe; the nose is herbal, close packed, on mixed berries, notes of liqueur concentration, blackberries, thyme. The palate has a padded feel, a criss-cross of busy fruits, with layered tannins, has structure, is on a little density, sustains with a couch of gras that is on a little juice intensity, the length solid. A note of blood-mineral appears on the aftertaste. This is potentially quite complex is more solar, de la terre than the 2024, holds latent emphasis. Bottled last week. “Like 2009, 2023 was difficult to vinify – it took a long time, but those long vinifications can create the most complex wines. The harvest started 7-8 September,” Vincent Avril. The yields are always very low – not much more than 20 hl/ha, which serves to concentrate the red wine, and there is an above average emphasis on the Mourvèdre, all planted in clay soils. The blend is now usually 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% various including white grapes, having been 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% various including white grapes into the early 2010s. The 2014 red was utterly charming, a real en finesse ****(*) beauty, while the 2015 is logically a bolder, more demanding ***** wine, requiring patience. The ***** 2016 red is deep and long, a vintage that will age extremely well. The whites drink well in their first couple of years, then back off, close down, and emerge as more complex, stimulating wines around seven years' old; they live well and deserve a top table accompaniment."
