"This is lovely right from the start, offering a velvety wave of raspberry compote that’s followed by alluring fruitcake, incense, black tea and warned anise notes. Black cherry and dark plum paste notes line the finish, playing a supporting role to the raspberry component. With mouthfeel, length and fruit to burn, what’s not to like? "Intensely ripe strawberry and red cherry preserves abound in this gobsmackingly plump blend of 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault aged primarily in large-format oak. At 16% abv, there's no doubt how massive this wine is, but somehow, it's not at all brooding or out of balance. Supple yet fresh in fruit and decidedly finessed, it's a wine that's ready now but should drink well through 2030."

"The classic 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape comes from tiny, tiny yields and checks in as 60% Grenache, 15% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, and the rest Cinsault that was 70% destemmed and brought up in a mix of used barrels. It's a beautiful, layered wine that delivers the goods, offerin loads of black raspberry fruit, notes of spice, garrigue, licorice, and pepper, medium to full body, good acidity, and a great finish. Beautifully balanced, it can be drunk today with incredible pleasure or cellared for 15 years or more."

"Deep black-hued robe. The nose is broad, freighted, has a deep layering of stone fruits, a suggestion of rose hip: you can stand a paddle in this, given its depth. It’s a manly start. The palate shines with its stream of mulberry, damson jam flavour, builds some gasp as it closes, the degree straining at the leash. This is very much sipping wine, with notes of kirsch and eau de vie apparent; not far from Rasteau Vin Doux Naturel Rancio, in effect. It has a tasty flourish before the finish, and its sweetness will find pleased takers. You cannot call this balanced, however. 55% Gren, 25% Syr, 15% Mourv, 5% Cins. From 2022. 2040-42"

Das Weingut
Ganz bescheiden liegt das Weingut in Chateauneuf du Pape in der Nähe des Schlosses. Ebenso bescheiden gibt sich die Familie Usseglio. Die Weine jedoch präsentieren sich ganz außerordentlich und herausragend. Nicht zuletzt die enorm geringen Erträge, die man sich auferlegt und die traditionelle Weinbereitung machen das Weingut zu einem der Stars der Apellation.
Seinen Ursprung hat das Weingut 1948, als der italienische Einwanderer Francis Usseglio 8 ha Weinland in Chateauneuf erwarb und ein Jahr später seinen ersten Wein abfüllte. Sein Sohn Pierre vergrößerte das Gut, das heute ca. 24 ha umfasst und von dessen Söhnen Jean-Pierre und Thierry Usseglio geleitet wird. Viele der Grenache-Rebstöcke sind heute ca. 80 Jahre alt und ein unschätzbares Kapital für die Qualität der Usseglio-Weine.
