"One of the top handful wines in the vintage, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape De Mon Aieul is all Grenache, from the different terroirs (one sand, one clay, and one limestone) that was 50% destemmed and aged all in older demi-muids. Reminding me of the 2007 with its incredible perfume of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, flowery incense, peppery and Provencal garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, gorgeous tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. A wine of incredible purity, precision, and elegance, yet also with power and opulence, this sensational effort is in need of 3-4 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades."

"Nussig-holziger und animalischer Duft nach reifen schwarzen und roten Beeren mit Provencekräutern, etwas Fenchel sowie erdigen und pfeffrigen Nuancen. Reife, herb-saftige, teils eingemacht wirkende, teils frische schwarze Frucht mit Noten kleiner roter Beeren, straffem, reifem Tannin und Biss, deutlich Bitterschokolade und Kaffee am Gaumen, nachhaltig, gute Tiefe, wacholdrig-ätherische Noten, ein wenig Trockenkräuter, gewisse Tiefe, viel Kraft und Alkohol, noch unentwicklelt, salzige Mineralik, sehr guter, fester, wieder betont schwarzfruchtiger Abgang mit Kaffee und Kakao. 2024-2038"

"Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, breitere Ockerrandaufhellung. Mit feinem Nougat unterlegte frische schwarze Waldbeeren, reife Kirschen, etwas Pflaumen, ein Hauch von Feigen. Kraftvoll, etwas dunkle Schokokolade, reife Tannine, mineralisch,. süßer Nachhall, zeigt noch etwas Babyspeck, aber auch große Länge, sollte erst ab 2025 angetrunken werden."

"Typically a standout even amongst the best of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this monumental bottling is sourced from 75- to 90-year-old Grenache planted in a diversity of pebbly, sandy and clay soils. Fermented partially in whole clusters, it offers black-cherry and raspberry flavors that are herculean in ripeness yet silken and deft, lifted by streaks of salt, crushed stone and smoke. A stunner in youth, the wine will likely improve through 2035 and hold further."

"Dark, full red robe; the bouquet has a savoury nature, is filled up with airs of date, prune, tobacco, smoky oak, its ripeness pronounced. The palate is generous and rich on the attack, the feel smooth all through. It fits together well to give that continuity, lengthens with a good, sure hand, the finish broad and layered. It has a sumptuous side to it, but doesn’t overstep the mark. From 2025-26, decant it. 2047-49"

"All Grenache, all whole cluster, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul combines hints of menthol and steaminess with big blackberry and raspberry fruit. Full-bodied, creamy and lush, it finishes long and velvety, a tour de force of Grenache. This domaine, located in the village of Cha?teauneuf du Pape, has built a solid reputation over the years as producing rich, ripe red wines, so it's interesting to see that Thierry Usseglio and his son, Gregory, are experimenting with the use of whole bunches and an entirely new wine style that combines a large proportion of white grapes and use of amphorae. One of the nice things about the 2020s at this estate is that there is a clear delineation of quality throughout the range, a distinction that has been blurred somewhat in past vintages. I'm not sure if it's a deliberate attempt at this on their part or just a product of the vintage, but it is a welcome development. And fans of the rich, ripe style here need not worry about the wines' taking a different tack, they just come across as a bit more refined and elegant than in the past."

Das Weingut
Ganz bescheiden liegt das Weingut in Chateauneuf du Pape in der Nähe des Schlosses. Ebenso bescheiden gibt sich die Familie Usseglio. Die Weine jedoch präsentieren sich ganz außerordentlich und herausragend. Nicht zuletzt die enorm geringen Erträge, die man sich auferlegt und die traditionelle Weinbereitung machen das Weingut zu einem der Stars der Apellation.
Seinen Ursprung hat das Weingut 1948, als der italienische Einwanderer Francis Usseglio 8 ha Weinland in Chateauneuf erwarb und ein Jahr später seinen ersten Wein abfüllte. Sein Sohn Pierre vergrößerte das Gut, das heute ca. 24 ha umfasst und von dessen Söhnen Jean-Pierre und Thierry Usseglio geleitet wird. Viele der Grenache-Rebstöcke sind heute ca. 80 Jahre alt und ein unschätzbares Kapital für die Qualität der Usseglio-Weine.
