"From yields of just 18 hectoliters per hectare, Sorrel's 2019 Hermitage Le Greal is a great way for Guillaume Sorrel to announce his ascension to the helm of the family business. Scents of crushed stone and delicate herbal underpinnings accent waves of ripe, velvety cherry fruit, while the full-bodied palate is rich and concentrated but never seems heavy, instead finishing long, with an impressive degree of elegance. 2,500 bottles produced."

A firm palate with bacon, spice, pepper and ashy smoky notes. Ripe and rich and concentrated with really fine, delineated tannins. Creamy mouthfeel at the moment, which will integrate."

"Dark, shiny, attractive robe; there’s an issue of inner power, strength on the bouquet, black cherry, black olives, licorice. It’s reserved for now. The palate gives a silken ride, a large ball of gras coasting along, is sumptuous and persistent. Black berry fruit in coulis-liqueur form is central to it. There are marked Southern tones here. As it stands, it’s weighty, not enlightened, is a savoury wine that will stand the test of time, is on sipping status currently. 15°. Bottled 14 April 2021. From 2029, decant - patience much required for it. It’s **** for now. 2058-61"

"Deep glistening magenta. Hugely expressive cherry blackberry espresso and floral aromas along with suggestions of smoked meat licorice and star anise. Deeply concentrated as well as energetic on the palate offering intense black and blue fruit preserve fruitcake exotic spice and floral pastille flavors that stretch out and take on a smoky mineral aspect as the wine opens up. Finishes extremely long and juicy showing sharp delineation steadily building tannins and strong mineral thrust on the floral-accented finish."

Das Weingut
Marc Sorrel – die Augen der Wissenden beginnen zu leuchten, wenn über die Weine dieser kleinen Domaine gesprochen wird.
In der Region Hermitage, die schon die Lieblingsweine von Ludwig XIV., Thomas Jefferson oder den russischen Zaren hervorgebracht hat, beginnt die Geschichte des Weinguts 1928 mit Marc's Großvater Felix, der allerdings schon mit dem Verkauf von Trauben sehr zufrieden war. Vater Henri weitete die Zusammenarbeit mit Händlern aus aber zu den ersten eigenen Abfüllungen dauerte es bis in die 1970er Jahre. Der entscheidende Schritt war dann 1984 der Einstieg von Marc, der beschloss, es den berühmten Häusern der Nachbarschaft (Chapoutier, Jaboulet, Chave, Delas) gleich zu tun. 2018 erfolgte nun die Übergabe an seinen Sohn Guillaume, der natürlich schon die Jahre zuvor den Betrieb mit gestaltet hat.
Die ca. 137 ha Rebfläche von Hermitage teilen sich ca. 15 Eigentümer, Sorrel verfügt über ca. 2 ha. Dabei sind allerfeinste Filetstücke z.B. 1 ha mitten in der Lage Méal, deren Rebstöcke bereits 1928 von Felix Sorrel gepflanzt wurden, sowie in der Lage Greffieux wo Marc Sorrel 1984 gepflanzt hat. Um diese Schätze möglichst schonend zu bearbeiten, werden sämtliche Bodenarbeiten nur mit Pferdekraft bewerkstelligt. Schwere Maschinen sucht man hier vergebens.
Die meisten Böden sind mehr von Kalkstein, Kies, Ton und Sand geprägt als vom Granit z.B. in Bessard. Daher sind die Weine von Sorrel auch weniger streng, brauchen aber trotzdem oft 10 Jahre, um zu gedeihen. Das ganze Register dieser geschichtsträchtigen Weine zeigt sich dann mit Dichte und Kraft, jedoch stets mit großer Anmut.

Zusätzlich stehen ca. 2 ha exzellente Lagen bei Larnage im benachbarten Crozes-Hermitage zu Verfügung.

Jüngst hat Sohn Guillaume Sorrel das Zepter übernommen und führt das Weingut mit nahtlos fortgesetztem Qualitätsgedanken weiter.
