"Getting more than one exclamation in the notes, the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aieul is a deep, rich yet vibrant red that offers a kaleidoscope of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, crushed flowers, Asian spices, and cured meats. It's more opulent and sexier than the 2010, fresher and purer than the 2007, has deep, full-bodied aromas ond flavors, and a hugh finish. It's a sensational, heavenly Chateauneuf-du-Pape that tops out my scale. This cuvée is 100% Grenache that was not destemmed and was aged in 20% demi-muids and the balance in concrete tanks."

"Voluptuous and penetrating, this pure Grenache bottling offers breathtaking freshness for such a rich wine. Blackberry and plum flavors are ripe but edged by cooling minerals and heady tones of garrigue, allspice and charcuterie. It's a rich, mouthcoating wine wrapped in fine, chalky tannins. Already irresistible it also has massive staying power. It will peak from now through 2030."

Very dark red robe, all the way up, glistens with wellbeing. The bouquet is a curvy, suavely fruited affair, has ease and style delivered discreetly above its depth. The palate is mega juicy, a real basket of abundance, attacks on wavy red stone fruits with flecks of herbs such as rosemary, also laurel. It finishes with serious, lasting and refined length. This handles its power well thanks to the richness, and is a handsome wine, deserving a good haunch of venison or a rich beef dish. 16°. 9,000 b. From 2021-22. 2038-40"

"Dezentes Boisée, mineralische Noten, Eisen, Süßkirsche, Garrigue – ein sehr komplexes, wenngleich noch jugendlich zurückhaltendes Duftbild. Am Gaumen ein Wein voll zarten Nuancenreichtums, fast burgunderhaft diskret in seinem Extrakt, und trotz 16 Volumenprozent Alkohol elegant und fast schon feingliedrig wirkend. Hat dabei Ladungen von Gerbstoff, aber alles hoch aufgelöst und schwerelos bei intensiv mineralischer Grundierung. Lang."

"All Grenache, all whole cluster and from parcels in La Guigasse, Le Crau and Les Serres, the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul has evolved beautifully since I tasted it last year, showing vibrant floral and tea-like notes, raspberry fruit and hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, rich and velvety, with overtones of spice cake on the long, crisp finish. Tasting it, I was surprise to find out the alcohol level, as it showed no obvious heat - a testament to how much else is going on here. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030."

"Limpid ruby-red. Intensely perfumed, spice-accented aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, potpourri and incense expand steadily with air. Palate-staining raspberry and boysenberry flavors are complemented by an exotic floral pastille quality and suggestions of star anise and allspice. Rich but bright and energetic as well, showing superb finishing clarity, smooth, well-knit tannins and persistent florality. Made entirely with whole clusters and aged in a 60/40 combination of concrete vats and oak demi-muids."

Das Weingut
Ganz bescheiden liegt das Weingut in Chateauneuf du Pape in der Nähe des Schlosses. Ebenso bescheiden gibt sich die Familie Usseglio. Die Weine jedoch präsentieren sich ganz außerordentlich und herausragend. Nicht zuletzt die enorm geringen Erträge, die man sich auferlegt und die traditionelle Weinbereitung machen das Weingut zu einem der Stars der Apellation.
Seinen Ursprung hat das Weingut 1948, als der italienische Einwanderer Francis Usseglio 8 ha Weinland in Chateauneuf erwarb und ein Jahr später seinen ersten Wein abfüllte. Sein Sohn Pierre vergrößerte das Gut, das heute ca. 24 ha umfasst und von dessen Söhnen Jean-Pierre und Thierry Usseglio geleitet wird. Viele der Grenache-Rebstöcke sind heute ca. 80 Jahre alt und ein unschätzbares Kapital für die Qualität der Usseglio-Weine.
