"Steady red robe; the nose mingles cloves, spices, rocks, plums, is not yet as one. The palate gives appealing red fruits with plenty of freshness, attacks well, pleasingly, so will express itself nicely, is fluid in its current state, and carries dash in its fruit, with a little late herbal crunch. It’s going to evolve successfully, thanks to that freshness. It will gain in flesh, content and expression, holds a good starting point, and I find has a reference to 2021 more than 2022. “It’s more floral, a lot more than 2022 (more red fruits, concentration) and 2021 (more black olives, tapenade),” Thiérry Usseglio. Wine Advocate: "The 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is more vibrant and perfumed than last year, unfurling with aromas of violet, rose petals, mulberries and garrigue. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textural, it’s concentrated yet supple, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins and concluding with a long, lively and ethereal finish. Crafted entirely from Grenache Noir vinified with whole clusters, it’s precise and superbly realized."

Das Weingut
Ganz bescheiden liegt das Weingut in Chateauneuf du Pape in der Nähe des Schlosses. Ebenso bescheiden gibt sich die Familie Usseglio. Die Weine jedoch präsentieren sich ganz außerordentlich und herausragend. Nicht zuletzt die enorm geringen Erträge, die man sich auferlegt und die traditionelle Weinbereitung machen das Weingut zu einem der Stars der Apellation.
Seinen Ursprung hat das Weingut 1948, als der italienische Einwanderer Francis Usseglio 8 ha Weinland in Chateauneuf erwarb und ein Jahr später seinen ersten Wein abfüllte. Sein Sohn Pierre vergrößerte das Gut, das heute ca. 24 ha umfasst und von dessen Söhnen Jean-Pierre und Thierry Usseglio geleitet wird. Viele der Grenache-Rebstöcke sind heute ca. 80 Jahre alt und ein unschätzbares Kapital für die Qualität der Usseglio-Weine.
