Der "junge" Cornas von Franck Balthazar. Die Cuvee Casimir kommt zu ca. 20% von Rebstöcken, die bereits 1961 in der Lage Les Mazards gepflanzt wurden (auf Ton und verwittertertem Granit) sowie zu ca. 80% aus jüngeren Anlagen von 2003 / 2004 in der Lage La Lègre (auf festem Granit). Ca. 4.000 Flaschen.

Vielleicht nicht wirklich archetypisch Cornas aber unwiderstehlich mit seiner Konzentration auf intensive, saftige und elegant fließende Frucht! Schwarze Beeren, Kirschen, Himbeeren... Feine mineralische Frische und feinpudrige Tannine geben Spannung und Nachklang. Chapeau!

"Dark red; there is a comfy depth of red berry, raspberry, wild fruits on a rounded bouquet. The palate has a sympa, open start, gives immediate red fruit, the second half solid, with crunch in the tannins, a good Cornas statement. It will fuse well, has a very different structure from 2021, a proper frame. 2044-46"

"Very fresh wild blackberry, dry forest floor and wild herb aromas. Considering this was 100% whole-cluster fermented, the tannins are restrained, gently building at the long, moderately dry finish. Plenty of pepper and wild herb character in the finish. Should age well."

"Crafted from old vines rooted in clay soils—two-thirds at the foot of the slope and one-third mid-slope—the 2022 Cornas Cuvée Casimir Balthazar unfurls from the glass with a delicately reduced bouquet of dark cherries, spices, pepper and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textured, it's elegantly juicy with good depth at the core, structured, youthful tannins and a long, spicy finish. Currently introverted due to the presence of reduction, it requires time to integrate its élevage and fully adjust to its recent bottling. This is an impressive effort."

Das Weingut
Franck Balthazar ist ein Purist und Traditionalist im besten Sinne. Das kleine Familienweingut hat er 2002 vom Vater übernommen, konnte vom Onkel N. Verset über 100-jährige Rebstöcke der alten Klone Petite Syrah übernehmen und produziert seit 2010 biologisch (allerdings ohne Zertifizierung). Mit einem Anteil im „Chaillot“ besitzt Franck Balthazar eine der schönsten Cornas-Lagen.
In Philosophie und Arbeitsweise ist diese Domaine ganz nah an den großen Namen Clape oder Allemand. Sämtliche Arbeiten im Weinberg werden von Hand erledigt, keine Maschine verdichtet durch ihr Gewicht die Böden, die Trauben werden i.d.R. mit ihren gesunden Stielen ohne Reinzuchthefen spontan vergoren und in traditionellen Demi-Muids ausgebaut. Eleganz und Natürlichkeit zeichnen die Weine von Franck Balthazar aus. Klare Frucht und Gerbstoffe, die nach 3-4 Jahren (beim Cornas) beeindruckende Feinheit entwickeln. Im besten Wortsinne klassisch.
