Die kontrollierte Bitterkeit von getrockneten Zitrusfrüchten des ersten ist mit einer seidigen, nahtlosen Textur verbunden. "Powerful, explosive, peppery mulberry fruit. Very smoky in style, with iodine notes and lots of dense, ripe tannin underneath driving fruits. Very fresh and focused, with good acidity, but has that Hermitage size and body, that majestic, impressive attack and grandeur. Very tannic, again with some stalky notes from 100% whole bunch. 8% co-planted white varieties, all planted in 1926, the same date as the Rocoules vineyard. Will be epic when it's ready. Very ageworthy for a 2023. Drink 2035 - 2049"

"The floral and wild berry beauty of this wine doesn’t lie in its enormous concentration and drive, but in the mind-blowing finesse and incredible silkiness of this great masterpiece of delicacy. Where are abundant alcohol and taninns that this unique expression of Hermitage must have? They are in there somewhere, but the wine feels totally weightless. From vineyards planted in 1926 by the winemaker’s grandfather in the Les Greffieux and Le Meal sections of the hill of Hermitage."

"Full red robe; there’s a bit of reduction, with red fruit gums, stylish red berry fruit below the reduction on the nose, an air that persists thoroughly, has real intent and authority. The palate attacks on a classy delivery of prime red fruits, with wavy tannins introducing themselves. There is a fundamental depth that supports it - it shows class and persistence, the juice welling up with a rather carefree tone, out and about. Chiselled rocky tones lead into the close: this is a long term project. It digs in deeply towards the finish, resounding depth there, shows the presence of stems on the aftertaste, a near chewy tone there. “I adore its nose,” Guillaume Sorrel. From 2029-30 2052-54"

"The 2023 Hermitage Le Gréal is on the road to success. Using roughly 10% of grapes from the Les Greffieux and 90% from the Le Méal lieux-dits, with the name Gréal being an attempt to transform both words into one, the 2023 was also co-fermented with 8% white varieties (mostly Marsanne). Swirling the glass unlocks pronounced verbena tea, crushed violet, rose water, stemmy subtleties, red plum, black cherry and fleshy flickers. Medium- to full-bodied, harmonious and well-defined, the 2023 is coming together really well. I can’t wait to taste it once bottled. Drink 2028 - 2040"

Das Weingut
Marc Sorrel – die Augen der Wissenden beginnen zu leuchten, wenn über die Weine dieser kleinen Domaine gesprochen wird.
In der Region Hermitage, die schon die Lieblingsweine von Ludwig XIV., Thomas Jefferson oder den russischen Zaren hervorgebracht hat, beginnt die Geschichte des Weinguts 1928 mit Marc's Großvater Felix, der allerdings schon mit dem Verkauf von Trauben sehr zufrieden war. Vater Henri weitete die Zusammenarbeit mit Händlern aus aber zu den ersten eigenen Abfüllungen dauerte es bis in die 1970er Jahre. Der entscheidende Schritt war dann 1984 der Einstieg von Marc, der beschloss, es den berühmten Häusern der Nachbarschaft (Chapoutier, Jaboulet, Chave, Delas) gleich zu tun. 2018 erfolgte nun die Übergabe an seinen Sohn Guillaume, der natürlich schon die Jahre zuvor den Betrieb mit gestaltet hat.
Die ca. 137 ha Rebfläche von Hermitage teilen sich ca. 15 Eigentümer, Sorrel verfügt über ca. 2 ha. Dabei sind allerfeinste Filetstücke z.B. 1 ha mitten in der Lage Méal, deren Rebstöcke bereits 1928 von Felix Sorrel gepflanzt wurden, sowie in der Lage Greffieux wo Marc Sorrel 1984 gepflanzt hat. Um diese Schätze möglichst schonend zu bearbeiten, werden sämtliche Bodenarbeiten nur mit Pferdekraft bewerkstelligt. Schwere Maschinen sucht man hier vergebens.
Die meisten Böden sind mehr von Kalkstein, Kies, Ton und Sand geprägt als vom Granit z.B. in Bessard. Daher sind die Weine von Sorrel auch weniger streng, brauchen aber trotzdem oft 10 Jahre, um zu gedeihen. Das ganze Register dieser geschichtsträchtigen Weine zeigt sich dann mit Dichte und Kraft, jedoch stets mit großer Anmut.

Zusätzlich stehen ca. 2 ha exzellente Lagen bei Larnage im benachbarten Crozes-Hermitage zu Verfügung.
2018 hat Sohn Guillaume Sorrel das Zepter übernommen und führt das Weingut mit nahtlos fortgesetztem Qualitätsgedanken weiter.
