"Very dark colour. The nose is racy, whacks out smoky bacon, crisp blackberry airs, mineral notes freely present. The palate is aromatic, with a rugged interior. The fruit is wholesome, the tannins dark and ultimately tasty. Black cherry and blackberry line it – this is a dark vintage. It is vigorous, challenging, true, STGT wine for the informed drinkers not casual trade. From 2022 for tapping into its complexities. 2036-38"

Very strong violets introduce this super-floral nose that also shows some pepper, cassis, blueberries and a dark, graphite-like, salty and mineral edge. The palate is replete with dark-chocolate flavors and once again fragrant violets. This is very, very fleshy and powerful, and you can sense the thick, healthy and ripe skins here. Long, long tannins wrap around dark-plum and blackberry fruits. This is expressive and a triumph with a lot to offer in the next decade plus. Best from 2020 through to 2030. Tasted from 600-liter demi-muids."

"The red of the estate comes from vineyards around Mauves, Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. The 2015 Saint Joseph sports an inky purple color as well as rich, decadent notes of black raspberries, olives, bacon fat and bouquet garni. Possessing full-bodied richness, a fat, unctuous texture, lots of classic Syrah pepperiness and gamy nuances, and sweet tannin, drink it anytime over the coming 15-20 years. Unquestionably one of the leading estates in St Joseph, Pierre Gonon is run with incredible talent and passion by brothers Jean and Pierre Gonon."

Dicht und saftig im Mund, konzentrierte, herbe, straff gewirkte Frucht mit sehr präsenten,dabei hochfeinen Tanninen, pfeffrig-gewürzigen Aromen, Gewürznelke und getrocknet-kräuterigen Tönen, tief und komplex, nachhaltig, noch völlig unentwickelt, aber schon jetzt betörend, deutliche Mineralik, viel Griff, langer, würziger Abgang mit intensivem, brillant reintönigem, herbem Saft."

"Brilliant violet. The alluringly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, licorice, Asian spices and incense and shows a strong mineral overtone. Stains the palate with intense black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that deepen and stretch out with air. Offers a compelling blend of richness and finesse, finishing extremely long, sappy and sweet, the smooth tannins sneaking in late. I can't wait to see how this wine turns out once it’s in bottle."

The Vieilles Vignes red, occasionally produced in small quantities, is exceptional. The Gonon brothers, true countrymen and taught by their father, make delightful, delicious wines of genuine pedigree. There is a sensible transfer of fruit from mature vineyards to the cellar, where methods are calm and watchful. No new oak in sight. The white is a high-class example of Marsanne, laced with a little Roussanne from a top, south-facing vineyard, Les Oliviers. Both red and white can evolve well over 20 years in the good vintages."
