Decanter: TOP 5 scoring St. Joseph 2023
"Violets and raspberries, this is a relatively light-bodied vintage. Fine, delicate but ripe, with lovely balance, making this very fresh and drinkable...."
J. Livingstone-Learmonth: 4,5 / 6 Sterne
"1) ***(*) (Les Oliviers, 600-litre cask, 30% of the cuvée, the most destemmed part of the harvest because the end June hail damaged the stems) steady red colour; lucid red fruit, strawberry, a touch of sweetness, also perfume-floral notes, with pepper and a hint of acetate on the nose. The palate has a droit-linear style, is vegetal toned with a little suaveness in its gras, but is still on the wire, shows white pepper on the close. The fruit is clear, has potential; there’s a little inkspot on the finish, a gain in depth there. It’s certainly naked wine. 18 years 2) (Javignas, S-E facing mid-hillside at Tournon, 200-220 metres, Syrah under 35 yrs old, 600-litre cask) **** dark red; an air of raspberry-mulberry fruit is well set, has an overtone of white pepper, is very discreetly vegetal. The palate strides along, carries a blood-iron imprint, has good drive, is more ensemble than the Les Olivers before, has some density and rather thick juice, ends on crunched tannins, is authentic, not refined, but genuine. 20 years 3) (Peygros, Les Rivoires at Tournon, Syrah 12-35 years planted by the brothers, high on the hill, poorer soil than Javignas more sun, wind, 300 metres, 600-litre cask) ****+ full red; has a nicely curved blackberry aroma, blackcurrant coulis, carries charge, lingers. The palate also presents cassis, plus black olives with salted touches, a sense of white pepper snap, mineral tones leading into the close which gives black cherry. This is a good foundation for the blend; its tannins are ripe and stream through it neatly. This is well set St Jo rouge. With Javignas, it is 50% of the cuvée. 21 years 4) (St Jean de Muzols, 50 yr Syrah, without the oldest ex Raymond Trollat Syrah in it, 600-litre cask) ****(*) red robe; plum-raspberry, light herbal airs, is more airborne than the Tournon contributors, carries a fine air of red fruits. The palate has fibre, pure red juice with a subtle, stealthy manner, is linear and iron like, STGT wine. I love St Jean de Muzols! The tannins are peppered, with time on their side, has a classic structure, will evolve gradually, bears a gentle rose presence, lovely intricacy. “The Tournon fruit is more pulp-like,” Jean Gonon – I agree fully. From 2028. 22 years 5) (St Jean de Muzols, post WW1 vines, 1920 or so, near R Trollat’s oak tree, 600-litre cask) ***** red colour; the aroma is high interest – red cherry-cooked raspberry, pumice stone, wisps of violet, is stately. The palate has a lovely intro of serene flow red fruits, carries mineral all through, a herbal angle, with drive in its chalky tannins, is STGT, with sève [sap] and rocky truth, harmony, very sure length. This is 10% of the cuvée, with the previous ST J de M, they form 40% of the cuvée. 22 years 2044-46"

Zitat J. Livingstone-Learmonth: " An STGT (Soil to Glass Transfer) domaine par excellence, and fantastic value and consistency - these red Saint-Josephs are top notch Syrahs. The Vieilles Vignes red, occasionally produced in small quantities, is exceptional. The Gonon brothers, true countrymen and taught by their father, make delightful, delicious wines of genuine pedigree. There is a sensible transfer of fruit from mature vineyards to the cellar, where methods are calm and watchful. No new oak in sight. The white is a high-class example of Marsanne, laced with a little Roussanne from a top, south-facing vineyard, Les Oliviers. Both red and white can evolve well over 20 years in the good vintages."
