"Moving to the Châteauneuf Du Papes, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Première Pierre checks in as 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Clairette, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault that saw a splash of stems and will spend a year in foudre. It has a killer bouquet of black raspberry and darker cherry fruits as well as spicy garrigue, pepper, and sandalwood. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, classy, elegant, finesse-driven Châteauneuf Du Pape that has serious richness, fine tannins, and a great finish. It’s a gorgeous base cuvée."

"Dark red; the nose wells up on a sweet surf of crushed blackberries, notes of raspberry, has a little gorse flower, garrigue influence. The palate starts with a cool serving of cassis, blue fruits, a neat precision in them, has an iodine, damp moss tone towards the finish, with pockets of pine, spark, as it finishes. It has a natural spur of drive within, and will take shape over the next two to three years or so, will not require great patience, is just a mite simple along the second half. 65% Gren, 25% Syr, 5% Mourv, 5% Cins. From 2026. 2044-46"

"Macerated for 35 days and partly destemmed, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Première Pierre wafts from the glass with aromas of dark cherries, bay leaf, spices and dark wild berries mingled with menthol hints. Medium to full-bodied, enrobing and charming, it's elegant and fresh with a eshy core of fruit and velvety tannins that lead to a long, fruity and delicate nish. This blend of 65% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault and 5% Clairette, matured for 12 months in 60% foudres and 40% used barrels, is a very pretty wine."

Das Weingut
Ganz bescheiden liegt das Weingut in Chateauneuf du Pape in der Nähe des Schlosses. Ebenso bescheiden gibt sich die Familie Usseglio. Die Weine jedoch präsentieren sich ganz außerordentlich und herausragend. Nicht zuletzt die enorm geringen Erträge, die man sich auferlegt und die traditionelle Weinbereitung machen das Weingut zu einem der Stars der Apellation.
Seinen Ursprung hat das Weingut 1948, als der italienische Einwanderer Francis Usseglio 8 ha Weinland in Chateauneuf erwarb und ein Jahr später seinen ersten Wein abfüllte. Sein Sohn Pierre vergrößerte das Gut, das heute ca. 24 ha umfasst und von dessen Söhnen Jean-Pierre und Thierry Usseglio geleitet wird. Viele der Grenache-Rebstöcke sind heute ca. 80 Jahre alt und ein unschätzbares Kapital für die Qualität der Usseglio-Weine.
