"Possibly the wine of the vintage, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Mon Aïeul comes from three separate parcels of old vines (La Crau, Les Bédines, and Les Serres) and is 100% Grenache that was not destemmed and was brought up in neutral demi-muids. Offering incredible aromatics of black cherries, peppery garrigue, flowery incense, sandalwood, and assorted Provençal nuances, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a seamless finish. There will be a scant 6,000 bottles of this elixir made, and you should buy it."

"Mildly toned red robe, indicative of its Grenache. The nose has a discreetly persistent air of sweetness, strawberry jam with a note of temptation about it. The palate continues the theme of sweet offering, a basket of mixed red berry fruits with tuneful tones, restraint exercised. It finishes on a pocket of herbs, leafiness with the tannins a mite underdone. It will present a harmonious wine around the age of 10 onwards, that’s for sure. From 2027-28, decant. 2047-49"

"The 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is deep andconcentrated, mingling aromas of spices and bay leaf with notes ofdark cherries, wild dark berries and owers. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and dense, it's velvety and sappy with delicate, fresh tannins, bright acids and a vibrant, long, dynamic nish. This 100% Grenache Noir, planted on several parcels on galets roulés, safresand calcareous soils, macerated for 40 days and matured for 12 months in foudres, is one of the wines of the vintage at both this address and across the appellation."

Das Weingut
Ganz bescheiden liegt das Weingut in Chateauneuf du Pape in der Nähe des Schlosses. Ebenso bescheiden gibt sich die Familie Usseglio. Die Weine jedoch präsentieren sich ganz außerordentlich und herausragend. Nicht zuletzt die enorm geringen Erträge, die man sich auferlegt und die traditionelle Weinbereitung machen das Weingut zu einem der Stars der Apellation.
Seinen Ursprung hat das Weingut 1948, als der italienische Einwanderer Francis Usseglio 8 ha Weinland in Chateauneuf erwarb und ein Jahr später seinen ersten Wein abfüllte. Sein Sohn Pierre vergrößerte das Gut, das heute ca. 24 ha umfasst und von dessen Söhnen Jean-Pierre und Thierry Usseglio geleitet wird. Viele der Grenache-Rebstöcke sind heute ca. 80 Jahre alt und ein unschätzbares Kapital für die Qualität der Usseglio-Weine.
