90 % der Rebfläche von Auguste Clape befinden sich an Steilhängen mit einem granitdurchsetzten Boden. Die Reben selbst sind 60 - 70 Jahre alt (einige sogar 100) und ergeben einen dunklen, robusten Wein. In dem wahrlich großen Stil von Clape verbinden sich üppige Frucht, pfeffrige Noten und starke, reife Tannine zu einem traumhaft strukturierten, extraktreichen Ganzen.
Cassis, viel Blaubeeren, Lakritz und fleischige Noten prägen den Charakter dieser großen Weine aus der kleinen Apellation Cornas.
Zu der Frage, was man idealerweise zu seinen Weinen ißt, lassen wir Monsieur Clape am besten selbst zu Wort kommen : "Wild, Kaninchen und Roquefort." Wir fügen noch Lammkeule hinzu und empfehlen eine Trinktemperatur von 16-18 °C.

Die Trauben für den "Renaissance" stammen von den "jüngeren" Rebstöcken des Weingutes. Diese sind jedoch auch mindestens 25 Jahre (und bis zu 55 Jahre) alt!

"The grand vin of the estate is the 2015 Cornas, and it's even more inky colored than the Renaissance, with a saturated purple/bluish color. It offers a truly profound bouquet of black cherries, melted asphalt, ground pepper, exotic flowers and graphite, as well as the classic iodine/bloodiness I always find in this cuvée. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and seamless, with sweet tannin and a stacked mid-palate, it has an almost Hermitage-like liquid rock character, shocking elegance and purity, and a huge finish. This is Cornas at its finest – hats off to the Clape family! It's relatively accessible now, yet I suspect it will close down with a few years of bottle age, so try one (or two) now and save the rest for after 2025."

"This has it all, from the dark, dense core of steeped fig, blackberry and black currant fruit to the smoldering charcoal, dark olive and singed bay leaf notes. Violet and white pepper nuances add lift before a prodigious warm cast-iron element provides spine on the finish. A brick house that will live quite some time. best from 2025 through 2045."

"Dark robe. The mineral glint of Cornas lies at the heart of the bouquet, dead centre, like a gold tooth in the Baddie’s grin. There is a gunflint grapiness, licorice, a hint of acetate, clear red fruits, violets: the nose is well varied. I also find acetate on the palate, which distracts; it is tight but well filled, has a core of great concentration, with a relative elegance in the shape on the second half. The attack leads on a clear strike of red fruit, raspberry, red cherry. It ends on a classic Cornas crunch, mineral, pumice stone. This is not a big, black-fruited monster, is a lithe wine, very Cornas. “A lot of people think 2015 is a great big year, but it has elegance also. If you move the wine – racking or bottling - it is quite open; once away from its bottling on 15 October, a month ago, or racking, the firm structure comes back fully. Almond skin, cherries, blood and herbal notes all combine on the nose, while on the palate this medium to full-bodied wine is firmly tannic but ripe and balanced, with a rich, velvety and nearly endless finish.
